Drain Holes: Small But Important

Introduction
At NTP Composites, we believe premium product quality comes down to attention to detail. In this article, we take a closer look at one small but important feature on carbon rims: drain holes — why they are necessary and how they can be customized for your wheel project.

Drain Holes: Key Facts

Drain holes, also known as water drain holes, are typically 2.5 mm in diameter and positioned on the sidewall of the rim near the outer edge.

Their primary purpose is to allow water trapped inside the rim cavity to escape. During wet riding conditions, water can enter the rim chamber through the spoke nipple interfaces or valve opening. As the wheel rotates, centrifugal force helps direct the water toward the drain holes, preventing moisture buildup inside the rim.

This helps:
  • reduce the risk of spoke nipple corrosion
  • eliminate water-related rattling or buzzing noises
  • improve long-term wheel reliability

Not Just for Water — Also for Air Pressure Relief

Although commonly referred to as water drain holes, these holes also serve a second important function: pressure equalization.

During tubeless tire installation, rapid inflation can sometimes force air into the sealed rim cavity through minor leaks around the tubeless tape or valve. In extreme cases, trapped air pressure inside the rim chamber may place excessive stress on the rim structure.

Drain holes help release this unwanted internal pressure and reduce the risk of over-pressurization during tire seating.

Custom Drain Hole Solutions

At NTP Composites, our standard rim configuration includes one drain hole on each side of the rim, positioned at the 3 o’clock location relative to the valve hole.

For OEM and ODM projects, drain hole quantity and positioning can be fully customized according to your brand’s requirements. Our engineering team can develop a tailored drilling program for your wheel project, applicable to both open-mold and private-mold rims.

Small details matter — and thoughtful engineering makes the difference.
