What Is UCI Certification and Why Does It Matter?
UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) certification is required for certain wheels used in competitive cycling. This approval ensures that your wheels meet safety and performance standards for major cycling events.
Which Products and Cycling Disciplines Require UCI Approval?
UCI specifies which wheels need approval under Article 1.3.018. Here’s a breakdown:
Wheel Specifications
Wheels that do not meet the following criteria need UCI certification: Rim material: alloy Rim depth: less than 25mm Spokes: minimum of 20 detachable steel spokes General: All components must be identifiable and commercially available
Cycling disciplines
Approval is required for wheels used in individual and mass-start races in Road, Track, and Cyclocross (CX), as well as Para-cycling events in Road and Track.
Keep in mind: UCI certification only authorizes the use of the wheel; it does not imply any endorsement of its design or performance. Certification can be revoked if the wheels are modified after approval.
How to Apply for UCI Approval
While UCI maintains strict regulations for race equipment, the application process is straightforward. Here’s how it works:
(1) Sample Wheel Building The manufacturer produces a sample wheel that meets the specified weight and spoke count. The wheel is built and trued. (2) Product Testing The wheel undergoes an impact test at a UCI-compliant testing facility. The wheel must withstand an impact energy of at least 40J. The manufacturer must provide test photos, videos, and a declaration of conformity. (3) Submission & verification The manufacturer submits the application online, including all required documents. UCI will verify the materials and process. (4) Payment UCI issues an invoice for payment. (5) Certificate Issuance Once the application is approved, UCI sends the wheel approval certificate and updates the official list of approved wheels.
Note: The biggest challenge is ensuring access to an accredited test lab with the proper equipment for impact testing. The test facility must have a flat steel anvil and a silicone rubber pad with specific hardness and compression standards (details available in the UCI guidelines). Flat steel anvil, the impact surface is covered with a silicone rubber pad of 20mm thickness (Hardness Shore A=50 +/- 5, Compression set of 40% acc. To ASTM D395 Methode B). The rubber pad requires to be undamaged.

(1) Product Cost: This is the cost of producing the sample wheels (varies by model and rim weight). (2) Service Fee: $100 USD per wheel. This covers wheel building, impact testing, photography, test reports, and certification submission. (3) Certification Fee: UCI charges 250 CHF per wheel submission (fees may be updated; please refer to the invoice from UCI).
