Custom Carbon Rim Drilling: Matching Rim, Hub, Spokes & Nipples

Introduction
Learn how custom carbon rim drilling can optimize spoke alignment, hub compatibility, nipple fit and wheel-building access for custom wheel projects.
Details
For professional wheel builders and wheel brands, rim drilling is more than simply choosing between 24H, 28H or 32H. The position, direction and dimensions of the holes affect how the rim interfaces with the spokes, nipples and hub.

At NTP, we offer custom rim hole drilling solutions, allowing wheel builders and brands to fine-tune the rim around their specific hub, spoke and nipple configurations.

Why Rim Drilling Matters

When we talk about rim drilling, we refer to both the spoke holes on the rim and the spoke access holes on the rim bed or center channel.

We consider not only the performance of the finished wheel, but also the wheel-building experience. Properly designed access holes allow wheel builders to use the appropriate tools to tighten or loosen nipples during assembly, tension adjustment and servicing.

Components such as hubs and spokes often have fixed dimensions and limited opportunities for customization. The rim therefore becomes an important component for fine-tuning the relationship between the different parts of the wheel.

When the rim, hub, spokes and nipples are properly matched, the wheel can achieve better spoke alignment, more appropriate component integration and a more optimized overall structure.

What Can Be Customized?

A custom rim drilling program can involve four key parameters:hole count, hole angle, hole pattern, and hole diameter.

1. Hole Count

Our rims are originally designed with common spoke-hole counts suited to their intended applications.

However, specialized builds may require a different number of spokes. For example:
  • Low-spoke-count lightweight wheels
  • Higher-spoke-count reinforced wheels
  • Custom front and rear wheel configurations

In these cases, a customized drilling program can adapt the rim to the required spoke count.

2. Hole Angle

Spoke holes need to point in a direction that matches the spoke path between the rim and hub.

NTP uses multi-axis drilling equipment that allows the drilling direction to be adjusted in four directions.

The drilling angles can be customized in the left/right and front/rear directions, allowing the spoke holes to better follow the geometry of the selected hub and lacing pattern.

This can help reduce unnecessary spoke bending at the nipple and support the fatigue performance and long-term reliability of the wheel.

3. Hole Pattern

The arrangement of spoke holes also needs to correspond to the wheel's lacing pattern.

For a conventional 1:1 spoke arrangement, holes are typically distributed evenly around the rim. However, configurations such as 2:1 or other asymmetric spoke patterns require a different hole distribution.

Custom hole patterns allow the rim to be designed around these specific wheel-building requirements rather than limiting the build to a standard drilling layout.

4. Hole Diameter

Hole diameter needs to be compatible with the selected spokes, nipples and valves.

NTP can adjust the drilling diameter according to the intended component configuration, helping ensure proper fit and installation.

This is particularly relevant when a wheel uses specific nipple designs or valve configurations that differ from standard components.

Who Is Custom Rim Drilling For?

Custom drilling can be particularly useful when:

1. You Use a Non-Standard Hub

The hub's flange geometry or hole pattern does not match the standard drilling of an available rim.

2. You Are Developing a Low-Spoke-Count Wheel

The wheel requires a specific spoke count and spoke path that differs from the rim's standard configuration.

3. You Are Developing Your Own Hub

A proprietary hub may require the rim drilling to be designed around its specific geometry.

4. You Want to Optimize Spoke Alignment

The goal is to create a more natural spoke path between the rim and hub and reduce unnecessary spoke bending.

5. You Use a Specific Nipple Configuration

External or internal nipples may require different drilling considerations.

6. You Need Better Access for Wheel Building

For internal nipples and carbon spoke builds in particular, appropriate access holes in the rim bed or center channel are important for allowing wheel-building tools to reach and adjust the nipples.

7. You Are Rebuilding Around Existing Hubs

A customer may want to upgrade to a carbon rim while retaining a preferred hub. Custom drilling can provide a way to match the new rim to the existing hub configuration, where technically appropriate.

What Information Do We Need?

To evaluate a custom rim drilling project, we typically need information about the complete wheel configuration, including:
  • Rim: model, ERD and rim profile
  • Hub: model, spoke-hole count and key dimensions
  • Spoke & nipple & valve types and models
  • Application: intended usage and performance requirements

With these details, our engineering team can evaluate the proposed configuration and determine whether custom drilling is suitable for the selected rim.

Custom Rim Drilling at NTP

At NTP, custom rim drilling is part of our broader OEM/ODM carbon wheel development capability.

Rather than simply changing the number of spoke holes, we consider the rim, hub, spokes and nipples as one wheel system — from spoke alignment and component compatibility to practical wheel-building access.

For wheel brands and professional builders developing a specific wheel configuration, this provides greater flexibility than standard off-the-shelf drilling.
